What is a pound?
The pound sterling is the official currency in the UK, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, British Antarctic Territory, and Tristan da Cunha. It consists of 100 pence pieces (singular: penny, abbreviated: p). The pound is the oldest currency in the world. The pound is the currency of some nations that do not use sterling.
After the US dollar, the euro, and the Japanese yen, sterling is the fourth most traded currency on the foreign exchange market. Together with those three currencies and the Chinese yuan, it constitutes the currency basket used to determine the value of IMF special drawing rights. As of mid-2021, sterling was the fourth most-held reserve currency globally.
A pound is a unit of weight or mass commonly used in various systems of measurement, such as the avoirdupois pound and the troy pound. In the avoirdupois system, it's typically equivalent to 16 ounces or approximately 0.4536 kilograms. The term "pound" also refers to the currency of several countries, notably the British pound sterling (£), which is one of the oldest currencies still in use today. It's subdivided into 100 pence. The pound symbol (£) is widely recognized and denotes monetary value in transactions, investments, and economic indicators.
