What is volume profile in technical analysis?
Volume profile is a technical analysis tool that displays the amount of trading activity at different price levels over a specific period. Unlike traditional volume indicators, which show the total volume traded during each time interval, Volume Profile organises volume horizontally across price levels. This helps traders understand where the market has experienced the most and least trading activity.

One of the most important components of Volume Profile is the Point of Control (POC), which represents the price level with the highest traded volume within the selected range. Traders often use the POC to identify areas of significant market interest. Another key component is the Value Area, which typically includes around 70% of the total traded volume. The upper and lower boundaries of this area are known as Value Area High (VAH) and Value Area Low (VAL), respectively.

Volume Profile also highlights High Volume Nodes (HVNs) and Low Volume Nodes (LVNs). High Volume Nodes represent price levels where considerable trading activity has occurred, often suggesting market acceptance. In contrast, Low Volume Nodes indicate areas with relatively little trading activity, where prices may move quickly if the market passes through them.

Traders use Volume Profile to identify potential support and resistance zones, evaluate market structure, and improve entry and exit decisions. It can also be combined with price action, candlestick patterns, moving averages, and other technical indicators to strengthen trading analysis.

However, Volume Profile should not be treated as a standalone trading strategy. Its effectiveness depends on the quality of volume data, the selected time range, and the prevailing market conditions. By understanding its components and interpreting them alongside price behaviour, traders can gain a clearer picture of market participation and potential trading opportunities.
