On January 1, 2009, the "E-9 Emission Group" series of notes was introduced. The E-8 series was no longer available after December 31, 2009, however it can still be redeemed at banking system sites until December 31, 2019. To discourage counterfeiting, the E-9 notes are referred to as "Turkish lira" rather than "new Turkish lira," and they come in a range of sizes. The present series is differentiated by the fact that each denomination shows an iconic Turkish figure rather than architectural characteristics of Turkish geographic places. The predominant hue of the 5 TRY banknote in the second iteration of current notes has been decided to be "purple."
