What is not passive income?
Passive income is frequently misunderstood and confused with ways to make money, as stated previously. Although a side hustle or second job can be a great way to boost your earnings, they are not truly passive unless they allow you to move backwards as you get more and more money. Passive income, however, is not... A passive income source is intended to supplement your regular income or enable you to live a comfortable lifestyle. Your primary job is not a passive income source.
Passive income is one of the most popular pieces of personal finance advice. It's what advisors tell you to set up for any extra money you might have, but it can be tough to figure out what passive income is. Income that flows without effort or liability on your part isn't always easy to come by.
Income is generally not considered passive when a person must actively work to generate it. This type of income depends on continued participation, such as completing tasks, serving customers, making sales, or providing professional services. If the work stops, the income may also stop or decrease significantly.

Employment wages are a straightforward example. An employee normally has to perform their assigned duties to receive a salary or hourly payment. Freelancing and consulting are similar because earnings depend on completing projects or providing services. Other examples can include tutoring, contract work, delivery services, and commission-based sales.

Some business income may also be active rather than passive. For example, an owner who personally manages customer relationships, marketing, inventory, and daily operations is directly involved in generating revenue.

Frequent trading can also require significant active involvement because traders may spend considerable time analysing markets and managing positions.

Therefore, the main characteristic of non-passive income is the continuing connection between earnings and active personal effort, time, or participation.
