The Gator Indicator, developed by Bill Williams, is a technical analysis tool used to identify market trends and phases of consolidation. It complements the Alligator Indicator and consists of two histograms that visually represent the convergence and divergence of the Alligator’s three moving averages (Jaw, Teeth, Lips).
The indicator has four states: Awakening, Eating, Sated, and Sleeping, which signal the beginning, continuation, weakening, and end of a trend. Positive bars indicate increasing momentum, while negative bars suggest waning activity.
Traders use the Gator Indicator to determine optimal entry and exit points by observing trend strength and periods of inactivity. It's particularly useful in combination with other tools for trend-following strategies, helping to avoid trading during choppy, range-bound markets.
