Stochastic etymology
Stochastic was first used as an adjective in English in 1662, with the meaning "pertaining to conjecture" and derived from a Greek word meaning "to aim at a mark, guess," according to the Oxford English Dictionary. Jacob Bernoulli coined the phrase "Ars Conjectandi sive Stochastice" in his book on probability. The term "stochastic process" was first used in English in 1934, by Joseph Doob. The Stochastic Process was widely used by Aleksandr Khinchin in 1934, but it had been used by Andrey Kolmogorov in 1931 as well.
