Monopoly occurs when only one business dominates an entire industry - or even a significant portion of it. Historically, monopolies have benefited corporations that hold them, since they can raise prices and restrict services without repercussions. They may, however, undermine consumer interests if there is insufficient competition to promote lower costs or higher-quality offers.
