What is name wrapper?
Name Wrapper is a smart contract that converts all registered ENS names into NFTs, increasing their customizability.
Creating sub-names in ENS has always been available, and the Name Wrapper expands on this. By permitting trustless subdomains, the domain name owner cannot change the subdomain once it has been provided.
When a person buys a domain name, he or she becomes the domain's registrant. This allows them the ability to modify the domain and create sub-names via the registry contract.
A sub-name is an additional name that can be registered under an existing domain. Sub-names can be established under any level of name, and the Name Wrapper supports wrapping them and giving separate owners power over them.
For example, John Johnson owns the domain name john.eth and wishes to construct sub-domains for his partner Alice. John could set up alice.johnson.eth — complete with unique permissions.
Registrants can better customise their registered domains and sub-names to their needs by giving or cancelling different rights by encapsulating all domains as ERC-1155 tokens. These are referred to as fuses.
All wrapped names include standard and configurable built-in fuses, and registrants have complete control over all registered domain and sub-name fuses. If registrants like, they can burn these fuses, modifying the rights of the domain name based on their goals and needs.

A name wrapper is a tool or protocol used in blockchain and decentralized systems, particularly in domains like ENS (Ethereum Name Service), to enhance the functionality and management of domain names or addresses. It wraps a name into a smart contract, giving it additional features and programmability. For instance, in ENS, wrapping a domain name allows users to set permissions, and subdomain configurations, and even assign multi-owner controls.
By using a name wrapper, owners can tokenize their names, making them tradable and interoperable across decentralized applications. It also enhances security by setting restrictions like preventing unauthorized transfers. Essentially, a name wrapper extends the utility of domain names, enabling advanced control and integration in decentralized ecosystems.
