What is an air-gapped wallet?
An air-gapped wallet is a type of cryptocurrency wallet that is completely isolated from the internet and any network connections. This means it operates on a device that has never been connected to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or any external network, making it one of the most secure ways to store digital assets. Because it is offline, it is highly resistant to hacking, malware, and other cyber threats that typically target online systems.

Air-gapped wallets are often used for long-term storage of cryptocurrencies, especially by individuals or institutions holding large amounts. They can be implemented using dedicated hardware devices, old computers, or even specialised systems designed purely for offline key management. Private keys are generated and stored within this isolated environment, ensuring they are never exposed to the internet.

Transactions with an air-gapped wallet require a manual process. Typically, a user creates a transaction on an online device, transfers it via USB drive or QR code to the offline wallet for signing, and then sends the signed transaction back to the online device for broadcasting to the network. This extra step enhances security but reduces convenience.

In summary, an air-gapped wallet prioritises maximum security by eliminating online exposure. While it may be less convenient than hot wallets, it is considered one of the safest methods for protecting cryptocurrency holdings from digital attacks.
