
Litecoin employs the scrypt hashing algorithm

Proof-of- Work is a consensus process that both Litecoin and Bitcoin use (PoW). Miners of both cryptocurrencies compete to obtain consensus across their networks, acquire the right to add valid transaction blocks to their blockchains, and get block rewards by solving very difficult mathematical problems using a hash algorithm.
Litecoin was designed to use the memory-intensive Scrypt hashing mechanism in order to avoid GPUs and ASICs. The goal was to make the Litecoin network more accessible to individuals, who are the cryptocurrency's most vocal supporters. As a result, it was critical that clients initially mine Litecoin using their CPUs. Scrypt-capable ASICs have been created over time, and they now account for the great bulk of Litecoin mining.
